ANNAPOLIS, Md. & NEW HAVEN, Conn. - GW sailing finished mid-fleet and ahead of three nationally ranked coed teams at the Navy Intersectional on Sunday to highlight its ultra-competitive two-regatta weekend.
GW enjoyed incredible sailing conditions all weekend in Annapolis, Maryland for the Navy Intersectional, which counted 17 teams either ranked or receiving votes among the 20-boat fleet.
The Colonials finished in 10th place with 590 points across four divisions and 15 races, edging nationally ranked No. 12 St. Mary's (594 points), No. 17 Old Dominion (654) and No. 19 Hobart and William Smith (742). Top ranked Yale cruised to the event title with 277 points, 179 points clear of runner-up No. 2 College of Charleston (456), as all nine teams that finished ahead of GW are currently in the Sailing World coed top 20.
Sophomore Daniel DelBello was the standout for the Colonials, finishing in fifth place in the Laser-class C Division with 105 points, including a pair of race victories.
The A Division quartet of sophomore skipper Brendan Shanahan, senior Henry Young and freshmen Miranda Bakos and Sam White placed ninth in A Division with 155 points, highlighted by a Race 11 victory by Shanahan and Young. Sophomore Colin Kennedy and rookie Roger Dorr teamed to finish 10th in the Laser Radial D Division with 150 points, while the foursome of freshman Kai Friesecke, senior Michael Ince, White and Young came in 17th in B Division with 180 points.
"Tenth is a very, very solid performance against an very deep national field," said Head Coach John Pearce. "We were solid across the board and received a really good team effort."
GW's women sailors battled at an "extremely difficult event" in the Yale Women's Intersectional in New Haven, Connecticut, placing 16th against an 18-boat fleet in which every team is either ranked or receiving votes in the latest rankings.
The Colonials amassed 336 points over 14 races, just 67 points outside the top 10. Host and No. 2 Yale (161 points) edged No. 12 Vermont (198) for the event crown.
The A Division team of junior Maria Sinagra and senior Meagan Murphy won Race 13 en route to 18th place with 185 points, while the B Division of freshman India Johnstone and Shira Golub recorded nine top-10 races and placed 12th with 151 points.
"We were in the battle the whole time, definitely had some tough races, but some highlights as well," said Coach Pearce. "It's important that we keep working hard against the best possible competition, which we'll do again next weekend at Connecticut College's Stu Nelson Women's Regatta."
Along with the women's event in New London, Connecticut, GW will also compete in the Kings Point Dinghy Open and MAISA Match Race Championship in Kings Point, New York next weekend.
