GW Volleyball Sweeps Davidson, 3-0

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Senior Kelsey Newman finished with a match-high 19 kills while sophomore Chidima Osuchukwu added 16 winners as the George Washington volleyball team swept Atlantic 10 newcomer Davidson, 3-0, on Friday night at Belk Arena. Set scores were 25-18, 25-23, 25-13.
GW (14-5, 5-1 A-10) posted its second-best attack percentage of the season, swinging .363 (55k-14e-113a) en route to its eighth win in its past 10 matches.
The Colonials got off to a slow start, facing an early 11-4 deficit, but rallied to win the first set on the strength of a 15-5 run midway through the opening frame. GW held Davidson (3-13, 1-5 A-10) to a .089 attack percentage in the first set as Newman put down seven errorless kills.
The Colonials defense was able to offset a staunch Davidson attack in the second set en route to a 25-23 victory. The Wildcats committed just one attack error in the frame, but the Colonials were able to use a late run to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. With the set tied 20-20, GW rattled off three consecutive kills to build a three-point advantage and later clinched the set on a kill by Newman.
The third set was GW's best of the night as the Colonials swung a match-high .452, totaling 18 kills against just four errors to clinch the match with a commanding 25-13 victory. GW conceded the first point of the frame, but regained the lead and never looked back, rolling to their eighth straight-sets victory of the season.
Newman's 19 kills came with four attack errors for a .429 attack percentage. She added nine digs, three blocks (one solo, two assists) and one service ace to lead the Colonials. Osuchukwu tallied 16 winners on a .387 attack percentage with three blocks (two solo, one assist) while junior Jordan Timmer facilitated the offense with 40 assists in addition to seven digs.
Junior Maggie Skjelbred led all players at the net with a match-high four blocks (one solo, three assists) while junior Maddy Doyle and sophomore Emily Clemens each paced the back line with 13 digs apiece.
GW returns to action on Sunday afternoon with a visit to VCU. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
