NORFOLK, Va. - GW sailing finished in ninth place at the War Memorial MAISA Coed Fall Championship as the second-year varsity program continued its climb in the nation's premier conference.
The Colonials improved six spots from last fall's 15th-place showing at the War and narrowly missed securing a bid for the Atlantic Coast Coed Championship, awarded to the top eight finishers in the 18-team field.
GW totaled 203 points over the event's 11 races and was edged for eighth-place by No. 17 nationally ranked SUNY Maritime by just 14 points. No. 3 Georgetown captured the title with 103 points, while host No. 13 Old Dominion, No. 10 St. Mary's (Md.), No. 14 Fordham, No. 12 Navy, Penn and No. 18 Hobart and William Smith all secured ACC bids.
"We were battling for top eight, but managed to hang on to ninth which is a really solid result for us," said second-year Head Coach John Pearce. "Our young group really showed great versatility in handling light winds on Saturday and breezy conditions to start on Sunday."
The A Division of freshman Brendan Shanahan and junior Matthew Ricci finished 10th with 109 points with seven top-10s and a third-place finish in Race 4.
The B Division of freshmen Daniel DelBello and Gabriella Malek (Races 1-4, 7-11) and sophomore Henry Young (Races 5-6) finished ninth with six top 10s and a third in Race 6 en route to 94 points.
The Colonials will now have two weeks to prepare for their final regattas of the fall season at the Atlantic Coast Tournament in New London, Conn., and Atlantic Coast Women's Championship in Ithaca, N.Y., on Nov. 16-17.
