GW Women's Lacrosse Hosts Villanova on Wednesday Afternoon

WASHINGTON - After concluding a three-game road trip last weekend, the George Washington women's lacrosse team returns to Mount Vernon Field on Wednesday afternoon to host Villanova at 4 p.m.
GW (4-2) is coming off a tight 8-7 loss at 19th-ranked Towson on Saturday, which snapped the Colonials' three-game win streak. Freshman Rachel Mia scored three goals, while senior Sarah Phillips tallied five points on a goal and four assists, and junior goalie Jess Hicks matched her career high with 10 saves.
Villanova (1-3) has lost three in a row, but has not played since an 18-6 loss to No. 18 Georgetown on March 3. Midfielder Justine Donodeo paces Villanova with 11 points on the season and is tied with attack Jackie Froccaro for the team lead with eight goals apiece. In addition, defender Shawna Giust is tops on the squad with eight ground balls, 12 draw controls and six caused turnovers. Amanda Hirschfield and Dani Wiedmeier have split time between the pipes for the Wildcats, combining for a 13.10 goals-against average, as Villanova has been outscored, 52-32, on the season. The Wildcats were picked to finish eighth in the Big East preseason poll.
GW won the only other meeting between the two teams, defeating Villanova, 14-8, last season in Philadelphia. Then-junior Megan Seidman led the Colonials with four goals and five points, while Phillips and then-senior Mia Breheny each tallied four points. Three different Wildcats scored twice, including midfielder Ali Judge and attack Shannon Lane, who each added an assist, as well.

For Starters: With a win over Villanova, GW would match the 2003 and 2005 squads for the best start through seven games in program history.
Home Sweet Home: After playing four of their first six games on the road, the Colonials will play five of their next seven at Mount Vernon Field. GW is 2-0 at home this season, defeating Howard and Long Island by a combined 42-11.
Helping Hand: GW's all-time assists leader, Phillips leads the nation with 17 helpers this season, and is tied for sixth in the NCAA with 2.83 assists per game, most in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Phillips has dished out a season-high four assists three times this season, most recently at Towson on Saturday. In addition, her 17 helpers are tied for eighth-most in a single-season in GW program history, the third top-10 mark of her career after recording 25 in 2011 and 19 in 2010.

Saving the Day: Hicks leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks 11th in the nation with a 7.36 goals-against average this season, as she has allowed just 33 goals in nearly 270 minutes between the pipes. In addition, she is third in the league and 16th in the nation with a .492 save percentage. Hicks anchors the A-10's second-best defense, which allows just 7.83 goals per game, the 13th-best mark in the country.
High-Powered Offense: GW ranks 16th in the NCAA in scoring, averaging 14.17 goals per game, and has outscored its opponents by an average of 6.33 goals per contest, the 10th-best mark in the nation.
One-Two Punch: Seidman and Phillips have combined to make an outstanding scoring tandem for the Colonials over the course of their careers, and both rank among GW's all-time scoring leaders. Phillips is GW's career leader in assists (79), and she ranks second in points (172) and fifth in goals (93), while Seidman ranks third in goals (105), fifth in points (138) and eighth in assists (33). The duo is at it again this season, as Phillips leads the team in goals (15), assists (17) and points (32), while Seidman is second in all three categories (14g, 10a, 24p). In addition, Phillips ranks second in the A-10 and fourth in the NCAA with 5.33 points per game, while Seidman is tied for third in the league and 30th in the nation with 4.0 points per outing.

Century Mark: The second of Seidman's four goals against George Mason on Feb. 29 was the 100th goal of her career. She became just the third Colonial ever to reach the milestone. Phillips is just seven goals shy of joining Seidman in the century club, and they would be the first set of GW teammates ever with 100 goals apiece.
Going Streaking: Phillips and Mia have scored at least one goal in all six games this season, but Seidman saw her 12-game streak, which dated to April 1, 2011, come to an end when she was held off the scoreboard on Saturday at Towson. It was just the seventh time in 33 games since her sophomore year that she did not find the back of the net. She did, however, tally two assists, which brought her point-scoring streak to 26, dating to April 11, 2010.
Win, Lose or Draw: The Colonials set a program single-game record with 22 draw controls in their 20-6 victory over Long Island on Feb. 25. GW won 22 of 27 draws in the game, as senior Hilary Quinn recorded eight draw controls and junior Nicole Lacey had seven. Already GW's career record-holder for draw controls (143), Lacey matched her own school record with 10 at Drexel on Feb. 19. She ranks second in the Atlantic 10 and 11th in the NCAA with 5.2 draw controls per game.
20/20: GW has scored 20 or more goals in a game twice this season for the first time in school history. The Colonials defeated Howard, 22-5, in the season opener on Feb. 15, and the 22 goals were the second-most in program history to the 25 they scored against the same Bison in a 25-7 win on March 26, 2004. Ten days later, GW beat Long Island, 20-6, for the program's sixth-ever 20-goal game.
