GW Softball Falls to Evansville in Final Game of War Eagle Classic

AUBURN, Ala. - The George Washington softball team scored three runs in the fourth inning to cut Evansville's lead to one, but the Purple Aces added five more runs and the Colonials could not answer and fell, 11-6, Sunday morning in the final game of the War Eagle Classic at Auburn's Jane B. Moore Field.

GW (4-12) took a 2-0 lead through two and a half innings. Sophomore Chelsea Lenhart hit her first homer of the season to left field in the top of the second inning and freshman Samantha Dos Santos hit a RBI double to center field to score senior Amanda Zakeri in the top of the third.

Evansville (6-8) responded with a six-run third inning to take a four-run lead, but the Colonials cut the lead to one in the top of the fourth. Lenhart reached base on a fielding error and advanced when freshman Victoria Valos doubled to center field. Senior Kara Clauss also reached on a fielding error and sent home Lenhart for the first run. Zakeri scored Valos with a RBI single bunt and freshman Becca Garlinger, pinch running for Clauss, scored on a passed ball.

The Purple Aces answered the Colonials' rally with two more tallies in the bottom of the fourth and tacked on three more in the bottom of the sixth. GW scored its final run in the top of the seventh when Lenhart hit an RBI double to center field to send home junior Autumn Taylor, but it was not enough to overcome Evansville's late surge.

Class, who pitched the first two innings and returned in the bottom of the fourth, took the loss. She struck out six batters and allowed eight runs.

The Colonials return home to host Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday, March 13 for their first doubleheader of the season. Action is set for 3 p.m. at Mount Vernon Field.
