HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FL -- The George Washington Golf team will compete in the 33rd annual Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Golf Championship this weekend, April 29-May 1, at the par-72, 7,001-yard El Campeon course at the Mission Inn Resort near Orlando. The 54-hole tournament will span three days with the conference champion being crowned on Sunday, May 1.
The 11-team championship tees off on Friday, April 29, with Charlotte vying to become the first A-10 program to win six consecutive golf titles (Penn State won five straight crowns from 1986-91). Joining the Colonials and Charlotte in the quest for the 2011 A-10 title are Dayton, Duquesne, Fordham, La Salle, Rhode Island, Richmond, Saint Joseph's, St. Bonaventure, Temple and Xavier. Tee times for all three rounds of the Championship begin at 8:30 a.m.
Rhode Island, Temple and Penn State have won the most league championships with six each. Since 1998, only three schools have won the team title including Charlotte, Xavier and Rhode Island.
The Colonials placed fifth at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship with a team total 917 (298-309-310), 54 strokes behind tournament champion Charlotte (863) but 20 strokes better than the previous year.
GW's Cole Turner (`10) was the low Colonial at last year's Championship after he fired a three-round 220 (70-77-73) to place sixth among 60 golfers at the 2010 event. Turner was 11 strokes off the pace set by Charlotte's Corey Nagy who captured the individual title by shooting a 4-under 209.
Home of the 1998 & 2000 NCAA Men's Golf Championship, Mission Inn Resort has been ranked among the "top 10 of Florida's favorite golf courses" by Florida Golf News; received the "Four-Star Award" by Golf Digest; and was recognized as one of the nation's "top 100 golf courses" by Links Magazine.
Live scoring for all three rounds will be available at www.golfstat.com. For complete coverage of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship, including live scoring, click on the Championship Central link or log on to www.atlantic10.org.
