MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- George Washington opened the spring portion of its 2010-11 schedule by placing 6th in the 12-team Barefoot at the Beach Intercollegiate men's golf tournament Sunday-Tuesday in South Carolina. The Colonials combined to shoot a 886 in the tournament led by Andres Pumariega's four-under-par 212. Pumariega becomes just the fourth Colonial to shoot four-under or better in a 54-hole tournament.
GW finished with a team total of 886 (299-293-294) at the par-72, 6817-yard Surf Club Golf Course.
Pumariega (71-72-69) was the low Colonial and tied for seventh place for his first Top-10 finish of the season. His third-round 69 was the lowest single-round score by a Colonial in the 2010-11 season. GW junior Martin Liu (74-74-72--220) tied for 23rd place in the 73-player field. Senior Brendan Barrack shot a 225 (77-73-75) to tie for 36th place. Junior Brandon Rukin (77-74-80) and sophomore Brennan Wallman (83-76-78) tied for 50th and 65th place, respectively.
Kennesaw State won the tournament with a 845 (284-281-280), six strokes ahead of runner-up Gardner-Webb (851). Kennesaw's Matt Nagy won medalist honors with a 203 (67-68-68) to defeat South Carolina's Caulder Moore (207) by four strokes.
The Colonials next take a spring break trip to Miami, FL, where they will play NAIA St. Thomas University before returning to host the GW Invitational, Mar. 18-19, 2011, at Bethany Beach, DE. The 54-hole event takes place at the par 72, 6,834-yard Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club.
