ARLINGTON, VA- The George Washington baseball team split their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Barcroft Park against Massachusetts. The Colonials dropped game one 6-3 before storming back to take the nightcap 10-5.
GW (7-17, 1-2 A-10) held a 3-2 lead heading into the top half of the eight inning in game one. Redshirt senior Bobby Lucas was on point for the Colonials striking out seven batters and surrendering three runs on just three hits over seven innings of work. He gave up a pair of solo homeruns to Matt Gedman and was responsible for the eighth inning run that allowed UMass to tie the game 3-3.
After Gedman's pair of home runs gave the Minutemen a 2-0 lead, junior Stephen Oswald connected on three-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth to put the Colonials ahead 3-2. The Minutemen tied the game in the top of the eighth and then would score what turned out to be the deciding runs with back-to-back homeruns in the top of the ninth.
In game two the Colonials raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning using RBI singles from Oswald and sophomore Tyler McCarthy. UMass would tie the game in the top of the second but the Colonials continued the hot hitting at the plate in the bottom half.
Beightol reached on a fielders choice which scored senior Brendon Kelliher and Oswald followed by roping a RBI double to left center field to put GW ahead 4-2.
After GW added their fifth run in the bottom of the third, UMass responded in the top of the fourth with a two-run double by Josh Messier cut the deficit to 5-4. But the Colonials once again answered thanks to McCarthy's RBI single in the bottom half.

Senior Joe Richardson then entered the game with GW holding a 6-5 lead and was dominant over the final four and two-third innings, allowing just three hits while striking out three on the way to earning his first victory of the year.
Kelliher's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh put GW ahead 8-5 and McCarthy added his first homerun of the season, a towering drive to center field to stretch the Colonials lead to 10-5. McCarthy finished the second game 4-for-5 with one home run, five RBI and a stolen base.
