BETHANY BEACH, DE -- George Washington's Andres Pumariega won individual medalist honors in the 51-player field at the 13th annual George Washington Invitational men's golf tournament Friday-Saturday, at the par 72, 6,834-yard Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club in Bethany Beach, DE.
A junior from Miami, FL, Pumariega fired a three-round 215 that included a two-under-par 70 in Friday's second round. His effort helped the host Colonials to a second-place tie with Yale, each with 885. The University of Pennsylvania, coached by former GW coach and player Scott Allen (`93), won the tournament with an 880 (293-284-303) to edge the Colonials and Bulldogs by five strokes.
The Colonials' Brendan Barrack carded a six-over 222 (74-73-75) to place seventh, three strokes ahead of teammate Brandon Rukin's 225 (73-75-77) which placed 12th.
Pumariega and Yale's Sam Bernstein entered Saturday's third round tied at 141 but Pumariega held on for the one-stroke victory with two-over 74 while Bernstein turned in a 75 Saturday. Pumariega becomes the first Colonial to win a tournament since Juan Pablo Zuluaga's victory in a 2006 dual match against McDaniel College. Pumariega also becomes the first GW individual to win a 54-hole tournament since Brian Carroll's victory in the 2005 Joe Agee Invitational at Williamsburg, VA.
The reigning A-10 Performer of the Week, Pumariega is on a hot streak and parred 36 holes and recorded 10 birdies over the 54 holes. GW freshman Graham Lawyer (79-71-83--233) had a pair of eagles while teammates Brandon Rukin (73-75-77--225) and Benton Kircher (77-78-75--235) also recorded an eagle apiece in the event.
The Colonials' next competition will be April 4 in the Penn Quaker Invitational at Philadelphia's Cricket Club.
