Dustin Sweeney Named Assistant Cross Country Coach At GW

WASHINGTON, DC - Dustin Sweeney has been named the assistant cross country coach at The George Washington University, head coach Brian Beil has announced. Sweeney will be responsible for recruiting in addition to day-to-day coaching duties.
"Dustin brings years of coaching experience to GW and a lot to the program that I lack, and that is going to be great for this team in the future," said Beil.
"I am extremely excited to become the assistant cross country coach at GW. This program has great potential to perform at the highest levels and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to help this team reach their goals. I have high expectations for the team and myself and will not settle for less than our combined best efforts," said Sweeney.
Sweeney boasts an impressive coaching resume at both the high school and collegiate levels. He comes to GW from James Madison University where he was the assistant coach for the cross country and track & field programs, working primarily with the women's middle distance runners.
At James Madison, Sweeney assisted in the women's indoor and outdoor track and field programs. He coached the 600, 800 and 1500 meter runners while assisting the head coach with administrative duties. In the winter of 2009 he took over coaching duties of the nine-athlete middle distance program. Under Sweeney's guidance and new training program, he led the Dukes to the fastest 4x800m relay time in nine years, and the sixth fastest time in program history, resulting in a fourth place finish at the ECAC Championships.
At Clarke County High School, his alma mater, Sweeney assisted in coaching 11 boys' and girls' state championships and five runner-up finishes over 18 state championship appearances. The span included bettering or equaling several state meet records that had stood for more than 20 years. Additionally, 16 student-athletes went on to compete at the collegiate level.
Sweeney ran cross country at Shenandoah University, where he was named the track athlete of the year, All USA-South and All-MAC. At one point he held seven different school records.
Sweeney received his bachelors of science degree in kinesiology from Shenandoah University in 2009.
The George Washington University cross country season opens on Friday, September 3 at the Mount St. Mary's Duals.
