Water Polo Edges Iona, Advances at ECAC Championship

CAMBRIDGE, MA - Freshman utility Daniel Tyner broke a 4-4 tie with the game-winning goal with 3:11 remaining to lift the ninth-seeded George Washington men's water polo team past eighth-seeded Iona, 5-4, on the opening day of the ECAC Championship at Harvard's Blodgett Pool Friday.
GW (4-5) now advances to play No. 1 seed and CWPA Varsity No. 20 ranked Bucknell Saturday at 9:00 am. The winner will play at 7:40 pm and loser will play at 5:00 pm against opponents to be determined.
Tyner has already found Iona's number despite just playing his ninth collegiate game, having beaten the Gaels with late game-winning goals on two occasions so far this season. His five-meter penalty shot with 14 seconds left was the deciding goal in the Colonials' 12-11 victory over the Gaels on Sept. 11.
On Friday, Iona knotted the score at 4-4 with 3:39 left, only to have Tyner once again tally the clinching goal. He finished with two goals and five steals in the contest.
Sophomore goalkeeper Cameron Illes was solid, allowing a season-low four goals while making 10 saves. Freshmen Paul Deasey, Jason Veris and Luke Carrino added the other goals.
