ANNAPOLIS, MD -- GW junior Martin Liu turned in a seven-over-par 149 (72-77) to tie for 28th place in the 89-player field at the Navy Fall Classic played Saturday and Sunday in Annapolis, MD.
As a team, GW placed 10th in the 16-team field at the 6,528-yard, par 71 U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course. The Colonials' 36-hole total 602 (296-306) was 33 strokes off the lead set by tournament champion Delaware (569). The Colonials finished five strokes behind fellow Atlantic 10 Conference member Saint Joseph's (597), which came in eighth place, and 30 strokes better than La Salle whose 632 placed 15th overall.
GW senior Brendon Barrack carded a 74-76 (150) to tie for 31st place. GW freshman Graham Lawyer, competing in his first collegiate tournament, tied for 43rd with a 153 (73-80). Taylor Fuqua shot a 77-77--154 and Brandon Rukin placed 55th with a 155 (79-76). Liu averaged 4.5 strokes on the tournament's par-5 holes while Rukin averaged an even-par 3 strokes on all par-3 holes for the weekend.
Ideal weather conditions on Saturday gave way to rain on Sunday which delayed the second round by nearly three hours and was played in a light drizzle.
Runner-up Towson was nine over par for the event and eight strokes back of the Blue Hens. Towson's John Duthie won medalist honors with a 9-under 133 after a first-round 63 (63-70) to edge Delaware's Juston Martinson (65-70--135) by two strokes.
The Colonials next compete in the Maryland Intercollegiate, Sept. 18-19, on the River Marsh Course at Cambridge, MD.
