Volleyball Mauls Morgan State, 3-1, in CSU Invitational

CLEVELAND, OH -- George Washington defeated Morgan State, 3-1, Saturday afternoon to place second in the four-team CSU Invitational. The victory was GW's fifth in its last six outings and is now 7-3 on the season. GW defeated MSU by the scores, 25-10, 25-20, 22-25, 25-18.
As a team, the Colonials hit .542 without an attack error to easily win the first set, 25-10. GW won the second set 25-20, after overcoming an 8-2 deficit. The Colonial rallied to tie the set at 11-11 on a kill from Leah Hill and again at 15-15 on a kill from Alex Coward. GW took the lead for good at 18-15 on a Lady Bear attack error and consecutive kills from Coward and held on for the 25-20 win.
GW head coach Jojit Coronel substituted freely in the third set and the inexperience cost the Colonials as they fell, 22-25. The largest lead of the set was five (16-11) by Morgan State though neither team led by more than three points down the stretch.
With the starters back on the court for set four, GW raced out to a early 11-4 lead and easily breezed to the 25-18 triumph.
For the third straight match, GW sophomore Lauren Whyte led all players with 18 kills and added 10 digs for 18 points. Whyte and junior MacKenzie Knox were named to the All-Tournament Team. GW junior Alex Coward put forth a second strong effort Saturday with nine kills, four digs and a pair of blocks for 11.5 points. She hit .412 for the match. Freshman setter Hayley Woodford recorded 11 assists in back-up duty for Kate Crosby who contributed 30 assists and an ace.
The Colonials combined to hit .231 for the match compared to .072 for the Lady Bears. Candace Silva-Martin contributed a team-high 16 digs.
Morgan State (1-9) was led by Ashley Johnson's 11 kills and Dina Beamon's 14 digs. Erin Cox added 10 kills for MSU.
GW (7-3) next plays its home opener this Wednesday, Sept. 15 against Loyola MD (5-6) at 7 p.m. The match will mark the first competition in the completely renovated Smith Center arena. The Colonials own a 7-1 advantage in the all-time series with Loyola dating back to the 1983 season.
