WASHINGTON, DC -- Three new recruits are joining the George Washington men's basketball team beginning with the 2010-11 season. The newcomers include forwards Nemanja Mikic (pronounced "nee-MAHN-ya MICK-ich") and Chris Fitzgerald, as well as point guard Dan Guest.
Mikic is a 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward from Novi Sad, Serbia who came to the United States three years ago. He played two years of prep ball at United Faith Christian Academy in Charlotte, N.C. He averaged 14.8 points, five rebounds and two assists as a senior under coach Shaun Wiseman. Mikic helped lead the Falcons to a combined 62-11 record during his two seasons while maintaining a 3.99 GPA. "He is a really super human being," Wiseman said of Mikic. "He stretches the defense and can really shoot it. I've been really fortunate to coach Nemanja that last two years."
"Very good shooter with excellent range," Hobbs said. "He is tough, court savvy and stretches the defense with his shooting and passing abilities. He's a self-motivated, passionate player who has a great attitude and works hard."
Fitzgerald is a 6-8, 225-pound forward from Swansea, Mass.. Also a deadly three-point shooter, he played the last two years at Northfield Mount Hermon in Northfield, Mass., where he shot 47 percent from long range as a senior under coach John Carroll. He helped lead the team to a 23-8 record as a senior (18-10 as a junior) and Northfield Mount Hermon was nationally ranked during both seasons. His squad fell to Brewster Academy (NH) in the Prep Championship title game last season. "He is an elite shooter," Carroll said of Fitzgerald. "I've coached several great shooters during my career and Chris is right at the top of the list. He has come into games for us and hit six [threes] in a row."
"Chris is a long, deep range shooter," Hobbs said. "He shoots the 3 with consistency in the halfcourt as well as in transition. He has great size and is also a good passer."
Guest is a 6-2, 200-pound point guard from West Hartford, Conn. He averaged 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists per game for the Master's School in West Simsbury, Conn., under coach Ralph Auriantal. "First and foremost, he is a leader on the court," Auriantal said of Guest. "His strengths are going to the basket, collapsing the defense and finding an open teammate. He is a pass-first type of player but when the pressure is on, he can score and he shoots the 10-foot jumper very well."
"Daniel Guest is a physical point guard with great ballhandling and passing skills," Hobbs said. "He plays with confidence and composure and will add depth to the point guard position He's capable of taking it to the opponent and matching their intensity."
