WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington University men's basketball assistant coach Brian Ellerbe has resigned in order to accept an assistant coach position at DePaul University.
"My experience this past season with Coach Hobbs and GW Basketball was truly a great one," Ellerbe said. "I am indeed indebted to Coach Hobbs for allowing me the opportunity. My zest and enthusiasm for college basketball and the business was and is as strong as ever as a result of this experience. Working with Coach Houston, Coach Collucci and all the players was an excellent transition and I want to thank them sincerely. Lastly I'd like to thank GW Athletic Director Jack Kvancz and Vice President Dr. Bob Chernak for their support and guidance of the program. The decision to leave GW and our home, Washington, DC, was a very difficult one for both me and my family. I wish Coach Hobbs and the players great success and will enjoy watching the continued growth of this young, talented team."
"I really appreciate Brian's efforts, experience and determination," Hobbs said. "I know he will again be a head coach someday and I wish him well. DePaul is getting a fantastic and valuable addition to its program."
Ellerbe came to GW after spending the previous eight years as a basketball consultant for collegiate and youth programs as well as the last four years as vice president for corporate development for Madison Grace Construction Services. Prior to that, he served as the head coach at the University of Michigan for four seasons (1997-98 through 2000-01) including the first season as interim head coach. Prior to his stint at U-M, Ellerbe served as the head coach at Loyola College in Baltimore for three seasons from 1994-95 through 1996-97. He also served stints as an assistant coach at Virginia, South Carolina, George Mason, Bowling Green State and Rutgers.
A search is underway to hire Ellerbe's replacement.
