Colonials Upended By Towson, 6-5

ARLINGTON, VA - The George Washington University baseball team returned to Barcroft Park on Tuesday afternoon and fell, 6-5, to Towson in a rainy contest. The game was delayed an hour because of the rain which fell throughout the game. Freshman Ryan Heinz got the start, but was only able to 3 1/3 innings and allowed four earned runs.
The Colonials were led by senior Curtis Eward, who recorded three hits and drove in a run in the bottom of the ninth during the Colonials' late rally. Redshirt senior Chris Luick recorded two hits and a walk and also scored two runs. Senior Tom Zebroski hit his team-leading ninth home run in the contest and also took a base on balls.
George Washington (17-14) got a strong relief pitching from the bullpen when freshman Brian Derner pitched the final 5 2/3 innings and didn't allow an earned run. The Alexandria, VA native also struck out five.
The Colonials staged two late-inning rallies in the eighth and ninth innings, but were only able to score single runs in each frame to fall a run short. The game ended with a pinch runner stranded at third base.
The Tigers (10-23) were led by right-hander Austin Hurd, who went six innings and allowed one earned run. The pitcher also struck out five in the contest. Kurt Wertz also hit a home run for Towson and three Tiger hitters finished with multi-hit games. Sean Bertrand picked up his first save of the season by pitching the final three innings and allowing two earned runs.
The Colonials will return to action on Wednesday, April 14th when they host the Georgetown Hoyas at Barcroft Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
