GW Swimming Upsets Drexel at Smith Center

WASHINGTON, DC - The GW men's and women's swimming teams opened the day with two huge victories to start their second home meet of the season on Sunday against Drexel at Charles E. Smith Center Natatorium. The Colonials men's swimming team won 151-107 over the Dragons, while the Colonials' women's squad won 145-114.
The women's squad took first and third in the 200-yard medley relay. Freshmen Lindsay Moore, Remy Neville, and Sydney Saunders teamed up with senior Paola Leor to swim a time of 1:51.75 for first place while freshmen Chelsey Weatherford, Rachael Johnston and Sloan Saunders teamed with senior co-captain Sarah Beggs for third place, 1:56.86.
"It was a really good effort today, on paper it looked like it was going to be a lot closer," said head coach Dan Rhinehart. "We had some close races that we came out on top on. We have been talking about the last two weeks is to charge of the walls and get the finishes and they did a good job.
The men's squad raced only one relay team, Jake Mortensen, Phillip Graeter, Davin Harding and Marshall Seedorff tapped the wall first, with a time of 1:38.07, 12-hundreths faster than second place.
Freshman Caroline Myers won all four of the events she raced. In the 1000-yard freestyle, she got out to an early lead and kept extending it with every lap finishing with a time of 10:14.54. Myers' time will put her atop the Atlantic 10 in the women's event. Drexel took second at 10:43.31, while GW's Taylor Cole finished third at 10:46.01.
Myers also took first place in the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.17), an event where GW took the top three finishes. Kristina Martin finished second (5:13.58) while Cole finished third (5:17.53). In the 200-yard IM, Myers won with a time of 2:10.30 and was the anchor leg in the first place 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:338.29).
Leor won the 50-yard freestyle (24.19) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.10), with Sydney Saunders finishing second in the same events.
The men's squad had a strong showing from sophomores Niklas Glenesk and Graeter and freshmen Spencer Neff and Niccolo Wilson.
Graeter after the 200 medley relay went on to win each of his three individual events. He won the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.09), the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.13) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.78).
Glenesk won the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.83) with Neff right on his heels for second (1:46.29). Wilson took first in the 100-yard freestyle (48.00) with Glenesk finishing second (48.07). In the 500-yard freestyle, Neff and Glenesk took first and second respectively.
The Colonials swim next at the Patriot Invitational, hosted by George Mason, on Nov. 19-21.
