Volleyball Comes Up Short in Charlotte, 3-1

CHARLOTTE, NC -- The GW Volleyball team fell to Charlotte, 3-1, Friday night in North Carolina. In a match that featured 10 lead changes and 23 ties, the 49ers prevailed by the scores, 28-30, 25-21, 28-26, 25-20, at Halton Arena. The setback was the Colonials' third straight, all coming on the road, after winning their previous five straight. GW has now dropped nine of the last 10 sets.
Charlotte put together a team attack percentage of .317 (72k-20e-164att) while GW combined to hit .257 (56-19-144) for the match.
Sophomore Lauren Whyte led the Colonials with 17 kills and added an ace for 18 points. Senior Katie Zulandt hit .324 on 15 kills in 34 swings with just four attack errors. She also assisted on three blocks for a total of 17.5 points. Sophomore Candace Silva-Martin led all players with 23 digs. Setter Katie Crosby assisted on 51 of GW's 56 kills (91%) and added seven digs and three blocks.
Charlotte (13-12, 4-6 A-10) was led by Biana Rouse's 18 kills for 19 points, one of four 49ers with double-figure kills. Jenna Litoborski added a team-high 14 digs. Kara Raker hit .500 on 11 kills in 20 swings, three aces and a pair of blocks for 15.5 points. Charlotte's victory gave them a split in the season series with GW after the Colonials edged the 49ers, 3-2, in Washington on Sept. 25.
GW (17-10, 6-4 A-10) next hosts No. 17 Dayton (19-3, 10-0 A-10) in a 1 p.m. match Sunday at Charles E. Smith Center. The Colonials were swept by the Flyers a week ago, on Oct. 22, in Dayton.
