WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington volleyball team had little trouble in sweeping Temple Sunday afternoon for its fifth straight victory in an Atlantic 10 Conference match at Charles E. Smith Center. The Colonials won by the scores, 25-11, 25-17, 25-21 in just 84 minutes. It marked GW's ninth victory in its last 11 matches and they are all alone in second place in the A-10 standings behind only No. 18 Dayton, the Colonials' next opponent.
The Colonials' defense held Temple to a combined hitting percentage of .065 (27k-21e-93att) while GW hit a season-high .416 on 43 kills in 89 attacks with just six errors. GW combined for 12 total blocks including a solo by Alex Coward.
For the second straight match, all 15 Colonials saw action against the Owls. Sophomore Lauren Whyte led all players with 14 kills while hitting .400 and assisted on four blocks for 16 points. Senior co-captain Katie Zulandt hit .375 with eight kills and assisted on six blocks for 11 points. MacKenzie Knox hit an errorless .667 with eight kills in 12 swings and assisted on four blocks. Coward added seven kills and four blocks for 9.5 points.
Temple (4-17, 1-6) was led by junior Collin Wallace`s eight kills. Ariel Pierre added a match-high 14 digs for the Owls.
Although Temple scored the first point in each set, GW immediately took control with well placed attacks and solid blocking. GW's only weakness Sunday was from the service line where they combined to commit nine miscues to nullify four aces.
The Colonials have now defeated Temple in five of the last seven meetings after snapping an 18-match losing skid to the Owls that spanned nine years from 1998 to 2007.
GW (17-7, 6-1 A-10) will aim for its sixth straight win this Friday, Oct. 22, when it travels to No. 18 Dayton (16-3, 7-0 A-10) in a showdown between the A-10's top two teams at 7 p.m.
