MIDLOTHIAN, VA -- George Washington placed 7th in the 11-team Richmond Intercollegiate men's golf tournament Monday and Tuesday near Richmond, VA. The Colonials combined to shoot a 293 in Tuesday's third round led by senior Brendan Barrack's even-par 72 which included an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole. Barrack (78-75-72) and freshman Benton Kircher (76-74-75) were the low Colonials at 225, each tying for 40th place in the 69-player field. GW finished with a team total of 898 (306-299-293) at the par-72, 7,127-yard Independence Golf Club.
The Colonials, who sat in 10th place after Monday's first round, moved up three spots after they were able to shave six strokes off of their second-round 299.
The host Spiders of Richmond won the tournament with a 855 (283-279-293), just four strokes ahead of runner-up James Madison's 859. Liberty's Ian McConnell, competing as an individual, won medalist honors with a 209 (72-68-69) to edge Richmond's Sam Beach by two strokes.
"We're really proud of Benton [Kircher]," said GW coach Terry Shaffer. "He has really worked on improving his game and tied for low score on our team today. We've got to get off to a better start in the first rounds. It's a matter of getting into a rhythm after the practice round. Our third round today was more representative of what we're capable of. It's going to take some time but we're gelling and we've got a two-week break before our next tournament at Kiawah.
Next up for the Colonials is the Kiawah Intercollegiate, hosted by Charleston Southern, on Nov. 1-2, at Kiawah Island, SC. The 54-hole event takes place at the par-72, 7,061-yard Turtle Point Golf Course at the Kiawah Island Golf resort.
