VILLANOVA, PA -- The Colonials Volleyball team dropped the first two sets, won set three, but couldn't summon the comeback magic that had earned them their previous two victories as Villanova prevailed, 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 28-26 in the final match of the Villanova Classic Saturday night at Villanova, PA.
GW senior right side hitter Katie Butz and freshman libero Candace Silva-Martin were named to the All-Tournament Team. It marked the second all-tournament selection for each as Butz garnered MVP honors at the DC Challenge and Silva-Martin was named to the all-tournament team at the Diet Coke Classic at Minnesota last weekend.
The Colonials' Leah Hill led the GW offense with 17 kills and added 22 digs. Senior Abby Syverson had six block assists to go with nine kills. Silva-Martin recorded a team-high 28 digs. As a team, the Colonials hit .127 with nine total blocks.
Villanova (8-2) hit just .138 for the match but tallied 93 digs and scored 10 points on service aces. The Wildcats were led by Maggie Mergen's team-high 15 kills while teammate Kim Maroon added a match-high 33 digs.
It marked GW's first loss to Villanova in eight meetings dating back to the 1983 season.
GW (5-4) next plays in the Towson Invitational Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18-19, at Towson, MD. GW will face Ball State Friday, followed by matches with Penn and Towson Saturday.
