Colonials Drop Home Finale To James Madison, 8-5

ARLINGTON, VA - The George Washington University baseball team (20-32, 9-14 A-10) returned to action Barcroft Park for the final time in 2009 and fell to James Madison by the score of 8-5. The Colonial bullpen combined to go 7 1/3 innings, while allowing just two earned runs.
The Dukes jumped on the Colonials early with three runs in the first and second innings, keyed by a Matt Browning two-RBI double and a single by Mike Fabiaschi. The second innings runs were scored on RBI singles by Matt Townsend and Alex Foltz. Townsend was also responsible for the third run of the inning when he executed a successful steal of home plate.
The Colonials responded with a run in the first inning when junior Tom Zebroski led off with a single and stole second to get in scoring position. Senior Bryan Hwang brought him around to score on a single up the middle and cut the deficit at the time to 3-1.
The Dukes continued to pitch well and maintained a 7-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Hwang cut the deficit to 7-2 though when he hit his first career home run over the left field wall.
The Colonials continued on their comeback trail in the seventh inning when senior Andrew Haberern and junior Will Cooper collected two-out singles to put runners on 1st and 2nd for Zebroski. Zebroski tripled down the right field line for his second hit of the game to plate both Cooper and Haberern and cut the lead to 8-4. It was Zebroski's first triple of the season and fourth of his Colonial career.
George Washington mounted another two out rally in the eighth inning when senior Doug Eizen was hit by a pitch and came around to score on junior Jon Chirumbolo's double to left center. This left the Colonials down 8-5 after eight innings complete.
The Colonials will return to action this Thursday when they head to Saint Joseph's to take on the Hawks in the three-game series. The Thursday game begins at 11:00 a.m, while the Friday contest has an afternoon start of 3:30 p.m. The series will conclude on Saturday when the teams will have a first pitch of 1:00 p.m.
Colonial second baseman Sean Rockey continued his hot hitting by collecting two more hits and raising his batting average to .432 on the season.
