Lehman Powers Win Over Spiders in Series Finale, 4-2

ARLINGTON, VA - The George Washington University baseball team defeated the Richmond Spiders for the second straight day on Sunday 4-2 behind eight strong innings by senior right-hander Pat Lehman. Sophomore Brendon Kelliher had three hits in the contest and junior Ryan LaPointe recorded his first save of the season.
George Washington jumped ahead of the Spiders with three first-inning runs to give Lehman all he needed in the winning effort. Junior Tom Zebroski led off the game with a walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Zebroski moved to third base on junior Chris Holland's ground out, and scored the first run of the game on a RBI groundout by redshirt junior Sean Rockey.
The Colonials were hardly done though in the opening frame. Senior Tim Reeves and Kelliher hit back-to-back home runs right after Zebroski's run and the lead was 3-0 just minutes into the contest. Reeves and Kelliher combined to get five of the nine hits on the day for George Washington and paced the offense in the pitcher's duel.
Those runs were all Lehman needed as he avoided trouble in all frames except the sixth and added eight strikeouts to his team-leading total of 50 on the season. The senior also lowered his ERA to 1.57 on the season and has yet to lose a game with a perfect 3-0 record.
The Colonials added a run in the fourth, when senior Andrew Haberern broke for home with Zebroski in a run down, and was able to score before Zebroski was tagged out to give the Colonials an important fourth run of the game. The bullpen used three pitchers, but navigated out of the ninth inning with the lead in tact behind performances by Bobby Lucas, Michael Boyden and LaPointe.
The win lifts the Colonials to 13-14 overall and 3-3 in A-10 conference play.
The Colonials will finish their eight game home stand on Tuesday, March 31st when they welcome UMBC to Barcroft Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and George Washington's starter is TBA.
