Lacrosse Falls to Drexel, 13-8

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's lacrosse led 5-4 at halftime, but Drexel scored seven unanswered goals to begin the second half and went on to defeat the Colonials, 13-8, Sunday at Mount Vernon Lacrosse Field.
Junior Mia Breheny recorded a hat trick in the first half to spark GW (0-4) to a 5-3 lead with 9:45 left in the opening period. Nicole Musto halted a 3-0 GW run with a goal to make it 5-4 at the break and Drexel (4-1) went on to score the first seven goals of the second half to take a commanding 11-5 lead with 21:10 to play.
The Colonials attempted to rally behind goals from senior Katherine Sampson and junior Taylor Donohue, the latter making the score 11-7 with 10:32 remaining.
Charlotte Wood again pushed the Dragons' lead to five goals, 12-7, with 2:15 left, but Breheny added her game-high-tying fourth goal of the game with 54 seconds to play. Becca Drylie-Perkins tacked on an insurance goal for the visitors with 16 seconds left for the final 13-8 margin.
Sampson followed Breheny with two goals and added a team-high four draws, while Donohue and sophomore Audrey Joy chipped in one apiece. Defenders Katie Lilly, who caused six turnovers and won five ground balls, and Kelsey Honeyford, who finished with three caused turnovers and three ground balls, posted solid efforts in the loss.
Sophomore goalkeeper Liz Hoffman made one save in 37 minutes, while sophomore Christine Lovett finished the final 23 minutes with three saves.
GW outshot Drexel, 26-19, and forced 22 turnovers, but converted just 1-of-6 free-position shots.
At halftime, the GW lacrosse program collected donations to support the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, a non-profit organization that improves the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors and their families. FOJ pairs children with college and high school athletic teams and the children are adopted as honorary team members.
The Colonials host regional rival George Mason Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
