Women's Lacrosse Falls at American, 12-6

WASHINGTON, DC - Senior Katherine Sampson and juniors Taylor Donohue and Mia Breheny tallied two goals apiece as George Washington scored the first four goals of the second half, but American built a 10-1 first-half lead and held on to defeat the Colonials, 12-6, at Reeves Field Wednesday afternoon.
GW (0-3) attempted to rally in the second half, scoring three goals in the opening 3:47 of the period and adding a fourth with 15:53 remaining to close within 10-5. Following an AU goal 1:30 later, Breheny again cut the margin to five, 11-6, with 13:39 to play. However, the Eagles punctuated their first victory of the season with a goal with 6:43 left.
The Colonials trailed 3-0 early, but Sampson got on the scoreboard with 20:39 to go in the half to get to 3-1. The Eagles rattled off seven unanswered goals to end the half and grab a commanding 10-1 lead heading in intermission. Amanda Makoid led AU with three goals, all in the first half.
Sophomore Liz Hoffman made two saves through the opening 21:30 before being spelled by sophomore Christine Lovett, who finished with seven saves the final 38:30.
Senior Alaska Burr finished with a game- and career-high five ground balls and five caused turnovers.
GW hosts Drexel at Mount Vernon Field Sunday at 1:00 pm.
