Colonials Fall At Winthrop 11-5

ROCK HILL, SC - The George Washington Colonials baseball team fell behind early in their second loss to opening the season in their 11-5 defeat against host Winthrop in Rock Hill, SC. Sophomore Eric Cantrell (0-1) lasted 4 2/3 innings and allowed nine runs (six earned) on nine hits to the Winthrop Eagles, who have won all three of their matchups at home in the opening weekend.
Five different Colonials had hits and junior Sean Rockey led the squad with two RBI's and Tom Zebroski and Tim Reeves drove in the other runs for George Washington.
The beginning of the game got the Colonials off to a rocky start as they allowed runs in the first three innings and five of the first six. George Washington was able to score three runs in the third inning to pull within three runs at 6-3, but quickly allowed three runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to fall behind 10-3.
The Colonials tacked on two more runs in the eighth, but it wasn't enough in the 11-5 defeat. Five Eagle hitters recorded multi-hit games and Dominic Patterozzi (1-0) picked up the win for Winthrop.
George Washington will return to action tomorrow with a pair of games against Winthrop and Eastern Michigan. First pitch against Winthrop is scheduled for 11:00 a.m and tentative first pitch in the Eastern Michigan game is 2:00 p.m.
