Volleyball Falls at Xavier, 3-1

CINCINNATI, OH -- The GW Volleyball team fell to Xavier, 3-1, Friday afternoon in an A-10 match at Xavier's Cintas Center. The Musketeers won by the scores, 25-21, 27-25, 23-25, 25-20. The loss earned a season split with the Musketeers this season. GW defeated Xavier, 3-2, at Charles E. Smith Center on Oct. 23.
Neither team was particularly efficient as GW combined to hit .149 (52 kills - 27 errors - 168 attempts) for the match while the Musketeers hit just .153 (54-28-170). The loss was just the fourth for GW in its last 12 outings.
Hill smashed a team-high 17 kills in 51 attempts for a .216 percentage with 15 digs and two block assists for 19 points. GW freshman and A-10 Rookie of the Week Lauren Whyte added 17 points on 15 kills and 14 digs for her third straight double-double and seventh of the season. Candace Silva-Martin added a match-high 25 digs. Setter Alyssa Valentine assisted on 45 of GW's 52 kills (87 percent) and added 10 digs.
Xavier (18-11, 10-4 A-10) was led by Lauren Kaminsky's 20 points on 19 kills but she committed 11 attack errors for a .170 hitting percentage. Stephanie Vorherr led th Muskies with 21 digs. Setter Claire Paszkiewicz assisted on 43 of Xavier's 54 kills in the match.
The first set was tight through three lead changes and eight ties, the last coming at 16-16 on a kill by Hill. GW then committed back-to-back errors to give Xavier the 18-16 lead and was aunable to pull even the rest of the way before losing, 25-21. Set two also was competitive with a pair of lead changes and four ties. After a service error by Shannon Voors knotted the score at 25-25, GW again committed consecutive errors give the set away, 27-25. Set three was the closest of the afternoon with five lead changes and nine ties, the lat coming at 19-19 after a GW attack error. Two kills and a service ace late and GW found itself clinging to a 22-19 lead. Two more kills from Whyte and one from Katie Butz won the set for GW, 25-23.
The fourth set saw the teams battle through a pair of lead changes and seven ties. With the set knotted at 10-10, Xavier reeled off five of the next six points for a 15-11 lead and it never looked back en route to the 25-20 triumph.
GW (21-10, 8-6 A-10) next travels up I-75 for a match at Dayton on Saturday at 7 p.m. Dayton is the host site for the six-team A-10 Volleyball Championship, Nov. 20-22.
