DAYTON, OH -- The GW Volleyball team fell to Dayton, 3-0, Saturday night in an A-10 match at UD's Frericks Center, site of next week's A-10 Championship. The Flyers won by the scores, 27-25, 27-25, 25-20. The loss was GW's second to Dayton this season. UD also defeated GW in three sets at Charles E. Smith Center on Oct. 25.
Neither team was particularly efficient as GW combined to hit just .085 (30 kills - 19 errors - 130 attempts) for the match while the Flyers hit .181 (48-21-149). The loss was just the fifth for GW in its last 13 outings.
GW freshman and A-10 Rookie of the Week Lauren Whyte hammered a team-high 11 kills in 34 attempts and added 12 digs for her fourth straight double-double and eighth of the season. Leah Hill added a team-high 19 digs. Setter Alyssa Valentine assisted on 25 of GW's 30 kills (83 percent) and added 11 digs. Katie Zulandt was a wall at the net with three block solos and assisted on three more blocks.
Dayton (26-3, 14-1 A-10) was led by Rachel Krabacher's 13 kills and Lindsay Fletemier's 14.5 points on 12 kills and four blocks. Amanda Cowdrey led all players with 19 digs. The Colonials won the battle at the net, however, blocking 11 UD attacks compared to 9.5 blocks for the Flyers.
The first set was the closet of the match featuring six lead changes and 13 ties, the last at 25-25 before a kill by UD's Becky Novacek gave the Flyers set point. An attack error by the Colonials gave away the tightly-contested set, 27-25. GW's only lead in set two came early at 2-1 before the Flyers took control of the set and never trailed again en route to the 25-22 victory.
Dayton began the third set with a 7-1 lead and looked to run away with the match. GW, however, rallied to withing one at 22-21 before UD's Anna Eytchison and Krabacher sandwiched kills around a GW attack error to capture the set and match, 25-21.
GW (21-11, 8-7 A-10) returns to Dayton Friday for the six-team A-10 Volleyball Championship tournament, Nov. 20-22. Seeding for the tournament will be determined following tomorrow's matches.
