Golf Finishes Second at Delaware's Scotty Duncan Memorial

STANTON, DE -- GW junior Brendan Barrack fired a 4-over 148 (74-74) to place second, three strokes off the pace, in the 78-player field at the Scotty Duncan Memorial played Sunday and Monday in Stanton, DE. The Colonials' 36-hole total 612 (307-305) was good for second place in the 15-team tournament played at the White Clay Creek Golf Club, a par-72, 6,861-yard layout near Wilmington.
Senior Sebastian Palomares tied for sixth place with a 153 (74-79), two strokes ahead of teammate Martin Liu (79-76--155) and three strokes better that GW senior Cole Turner's 156 (80-76) who tied for 13th. Barrack's 26 pars led the field and he played the par-5 holes in 1-under averaging 4.2 strokes as did Palomares who carded 21 pars in the 36-hole event.
The Colonials defeated third-place Rutgers (617) by five strokes. The host Blue Hens won the event with a 606 (304-302) on their home course. Delaware's Kevin McLister won medalist honors with a 1-over 145 to edge Barrack by three strokes.
"We really felt as though we played well enough to be in first after Sunday's round," GW coach Terry Shaffer said. "After the evaluation of play by everyone, we feel that we should have scored much lower. Overall, all things considered, this was a good tournament for us to build on and make progress toward our goal of peak performance. Originally I asked the team to finish in the top 5 for all of our tournaments. We are headed in that direction with 7th-, 6th-, 5th- and 2nd-place finishes."
Hosted by the University of Delaware, the tournament honors the memory of the late Scotty Duncan, who served as Delaware's head golf coach for 27 seasons from 1963-90 and was a longtime UD athletics administrator.
The Colonials next compete in the Seton Hall Fall Intercollegiate, Oct. 18-19, at Bridgewater, NJ.
