Volleyball Keeps Rolling With 3-0 Sweep of Fordham

WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW volleyball team defeated Fordham, 3-0, Sunday afternoon for it's second straight sweep over an A-10 opponent at Smith Center. The Colonials won by the scores, 25-18, 25-17, 25-17 in just 77 minutes. GW also swept Rhode Island Friday evening.
Senior Katie Butz led the Colonials with 12.5 points on a match-high 12 kills while hitting .321. Sophomore setter Alyssa Valentine assisted on 30 of GW's 40 kills and hit an errorless .429 with three kills in seven attempts wit htwo blocks. Junior Leah Hill, who sang the National Anthem prior to the match, scored eight points on eight kills and hade 10 digs. Libero Candace Silva-Martin led the Colonials with 12 digs.
Fordham (8-12, 0-4 A-10) was led by Sara Friede's 10 kills and Megan Arend's 14 digs. The Rams combined to hit just .124 on 29 kills in 97 attacks while committing 17 errors.
GW set the tone in the first set with a 9-2 scoring burst to take a 17-9 lead that was helped by consecuting serives aces from sophomore power server Alex Coward. GW's Lauren Whyte ended the set on a kill for the 25-18 triumph.
The second set was the closest of the match with three lead changes and nine ties, the last coming at 10-10. A Fordham attack error followed by a Hill kill started the Colonials on a 9-2 run forcing Fordham to take its second timeout. The Rams came out of the timeout with and rallied to within four at 19-15 but three more kills from Butz gave GW the 25-17 win.
The third set was all GW after the Colonials pulled away from a 4-4 tie to outscore the Rams, 17-6 and coast tot the 25-17 victory.
The contest was part of Alumni Weekend and more than 20 former Colonials volleyball players and coaches were in attendance for the matches on Friday and Sunday.
GW (12-5, 3-1 A-10) next plays on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in a non-conference match against Virginia Commonwealth at Richmond, VA.
