WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW Volleyball team ran into an efficient buzzsaw Sunday afternoon in the form of league-rival Dayton which swept the Colonials, 3-0, in an A-10 match at GW's Charles E. Smith Center. The Flyers won by the scores, 25-18, 25-16, 25-15, in a 1-hour, 17-minute contest on Parents Weekend. Dayton combined to hit an incredible .432 (46 kills - 5 errors - 95 attempts) for the match while holding the Colonials to a .121 (30-18-99) attack percentage.
GW was again led by senior Katie Butz's 14.5 points on a team-high 14 kills while hitting .333 with six digs. Five other Colonials managed three kills each while freshman Candace Silva-Martin led all players with14 digs and Alex Coward added four service aces.
Dayton (20-2, 9-0 A-10) was led by 6-foot-6 All-American Lindsay Fletemier's 19 points on a match-high 17 kills with no errors for a near-perfect .810 hitting percentage and three blocks. Becky Novacek hit an errorless .600 on nine kills while Amanda Cowdrey and Rachel Krabacher led the Flyers with 11 digs. The Flyers blocked a total of six GW attacks compared to two blocks by the Colonials.
After GW opened the match by jumping out to a 4-1 lead on kills from Butz, Leah Hill and MacKenzie Knox, along with a Dayton attack error, the Flyers began to assert control of the set. A kill by UD's Hannah Clancy tied the set at 5-5 as the Flyers put together a 10-3 run for a 10-7 lead. GW rallied to knot the score at 11-11 before the Flyers again took control and outscored GW, 14-6 the rest of the way for the 25-18 triumph.
The second set was not as competitive as Dayton raced out to a 17-7 lead and coasted to the 25-16 romp. Following the 10-minute intermission, the third set found Dayton with a commanding 14-8 advantage before Coward reeled off three consecutive aces to force UD to take a timeout. Following the TO, Coward hammered her fourth straight ace that brought the Colonials to within two at 14-12. UD slowly built its lead back to seven at 22-54 on a kill by Cowdrey. Back-to-back GW attack errors brought the set to match point where Fletemier ended the afternoon on a kill for the 25-14 victory.
GW (18-8, 5-4 A-10) next hosts Temple (10-8, 6-3 A-10) Friday night in a 7 p.m. match at Smith Center. Earlier this season, the Owls defeated GW, 3-0, on Sept. 25 in Philadelphia. The GW-Temple match will be available on www.GWsports.com GameTracker and live video webstreaming.
