WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University volleyball coach Jojit Coronel announced Jenny O'Brien has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play for the Colonials beginning in 2008. She joins two other signees to make up the Colonials' 2008 recruiting class.
A 6-foot outside hitter from Matthews, NC, O'Brien has an impressive volleyball resume with four straight State Championship titles at Charlotte Latin School under coach Suzie Pignetti. O'Brien was named best offensive player on her team and accumulated more than 1,000 kills in her four-year career. She recorded 405 kills, 226 digs and 35 blocks during her senior year.
O'Brien was named a 2007-08 AVCA High School Senior All-American, a prestigious award that recognizes only 32 players nationwide. "This award is very deserved because she has accomplished so much," said Coronel. "Jenny is a winner, she knows how to compete and fight for each point and I'm happy she was recognized. Jenny's work ethic and competitive mentality will pay huge dividends and allow her the opportunity to make a difference as a freshman on our team."
With the graduation of the A-10 All-Conference player, Janine Brown, the Colonials coaching staff will be looking for the best all-around player to fill Brown's shoes. O'Brien will compete with three returning outside hitters for court time next season.
"Jenny hits a `heavy ball," GW associate coach Amy Bambenek said. "She's extremely powerful and also plays outstanding defense I was immediately impressed with her vocal leadership on the court. She is a passionate, driven player which makes her a lot of fun to watch. I have no doubt Jenny is going to be a model player for our program throughout her career as a Colonial."
GW concluded the 2007 season with a 13-17 overall record, 5-8 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and qualified for the A-10 championship tournament for the first time in three years.
