SPARTANBURG, SC - Sophomore second baseman Tom Zebroski went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI to lead George Washington (2-0) past Tennessee-Martin Saturday evening at the Courtyard by Marriott Baseball Classic hosted by USC Upstate at Harley Park in Spartanburg, SC.
The win marked the first time the Colonials have started a season 2-0 since 2005, when they finished 41-19 overall, and just the second time since 1993, when they started 5-0.
Junior Chris Neary made his first start for the Colonials after transferring from Scottsdale Community College (AZ). The left-handed pitcher recorded two strikeouts and allowed just two earned urns in 4.2 innings pitched. Sophomore Ryan Lapointe (1-0) pitched 4.1 innings of no-hit relief, striking out four in the process to earn the win, his first of the season and sixth of his career.
Offensively, GW pounded out 12 hits and had eight players record at least one hit. In addition to Zebroski, senior Charlie Kruer, redshirt-junior Gavin Swanson and junior Matt Boyd also notched two RBI each.
Combined with their 12-5 win earlier in the day over NJIT, GW hit .360 as they tallied 27 hits in the two games, outscoring their opponents, 22-11. For the day, freshman shortstop Sean Rockey was 5-for-9 with six runs scored and four more driven in.
George Washington concludes the four-team tournament on Sunday, when they face host-school USC Upstate at 2:00 p.m.
