WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University will hold Colonials Invasion, a basketball rally at Charles E. Smith Center, Thursday, Oct. 23, at 8:00 pm, with doors opening at 7:30 pm. The event is free and open to GW students, faculty, staff and season-ticket holders. GWorld ID required. For more information, call the GW Spirit Office at (202) 994-7670 or visit http://spirit.gwu.edu.
Thursday's festivities will feature a special-effects filled introduction and exhibition of both men's and women's basketball teams, as well as comments from head coaches Karl Hobbs and Mike Bozeman. There will be performances by the GW cheer team, First Ladies dance team, Colonial Brass Pep Band, GW mascots and several campus entertainment groups.
GW's new `George' mascot will be introduced, while the former mascot will be `decommissioned' through an entertaining video tribute and ceremony.
Fans also are being asked to design one-minute videos for the `Show Your Spirit' contest. The `pump-up' video finalists will be shown on the Smith Center videoboard throughout Colonials Invasion, with the winning video to be played at GW basketball home games throughout the season. In addition, there will be contests in which students can win a variety of prizes.
A pre-show tailgate with free food and refreshments will begin at 6:00 pm at the newly renovated student lounge at 2145 G Street and Veteran's Park, adjacent to Smith Center. Colonials' fans are encouraged to arrive early.
The GW men's team returns 11 letterwinners, highlighted by seniors Rob Diggs, Wynton Witherspoon, Noel Wilmore and junior Damian Hollis.
The GW women's team returns eight letterwinners, including seniors Jessica Adair, Jazmine Adair and Antelia Parrish, from last year's 27-7 team which reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the second straight year. A banner commemorating GW's participation in the Sweet 16 will be recognized.
The GW men's team opens its regular season on Friday, Nov. 14, when its visits Boston University at 7:00 pm, while the women's team hosts Maryland-Baltimore County Saturday, Nov. 15, at 2:00 pm.
