WASHINGTON, DC -- Defending Atlantic 10 Tournament champion George Washington University has announced its 2007-08 men's basketball schedule, which includes high-profile non-conference games at UCLA, at Alabama and against Auburn at Washington's Verizon Center.
The Colonials will make their first trip to storied Pauley Pavilion to face UCLA Nov. 28 before returning to Washington to face the first of two SEC opponents in Auburn on Dec. 2 at Verizon Center as part of a one-day, tripleheader in the 13th Annual BB&T Classic. GW also will play at Alabama Dec. 29 in Tuscaloosa. The GW-UCLA game will be televised as will several A-10 Conference games with details to come later.
Under seventh-year head coach Karl Hobbs, GW opens the season Nov. 10 at home against Mount St. Mary's followed by a home game with Boston University at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center.
The Colonials will travel to Blacksburg, VA, to play Virginia Tech Dec. 9 in a rematch of last year's Colonials' thrilling victory in the BB&T Classic. The GW-VT game will air on Fox SportsNet TV at 5:30 p.m. GW will see a familiar face when it travels to Binghamton to play the Bearcats, now coached by former GW assistant coach Kevin Broadus, in his first season at Binghamton.
The Colonials will play three games against opponents from the 2007 NCAA Tournament field when they face UCLA, Virginia Tech and Xavier. All three advanced to at least the second round, with UCLA advancing all the way to the Final Four. The Colonials also will play two games against opponents from the 2007 NIT field in Alabama and Massachusetts which faced one another in last year's NIT (UMass prevailed in overtime).
After the Atlantic 10 expanded to a 14-team league prior to the 2005-06 season, a new scheduling format was adopted. This season, GW will play a home-and-home series against Rhode Island, Saint Louis and Xavier in 2007-08. The Colonials will face the other A-10 teams just once with home games against Dayton, La Salle, Massachusetts, Richmond and Saint Joseph's, in addition to the home games with URI, SLU and Xavier. GW will travel to Charlotte, Duquesne, Fordham, St. Bonaventure and Temple. For the second straight year, the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament will be held at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall March 12-15.
The defending A-10 champion Colonials, 23-9 (11-5 A-10) in 2006-07, return 2007 A-10 Championship Most Outstanding Player and 2006 A-10 Sixth Man of the Year, Maureece Rice as well as junior forward Rob Diggs from last year's squad. They will be joined by nine other returning letterwinners, four highly-touted freshmen and Virginia Tech transfer Wynton Witherspoon.
