WASHINGTON, DC - Robert "Bob" Smith, Jr., has been named assistant coach for baseball at The George Washington University, GW head coach Steve Mrowka has announced. He replaces former assistant coach Jim Mason.
Smith comes to Foggy Bottom with 15 years of coaching experience and has spent the last 10 years as a professional scout. In 1995, he founded the Richmond Baseball Academy, a school that has developed over 160 college baseball players, including first-round MLB draft picks Matt Moses (#21, 2002) and Justin Verlander (#2, 2004), the 2006 American League Rookie of the Year.
Prior to establishing the Academy, Smith was an assistant baseball coach at Virginia Commonwealth University (1991-95), acting as both the hitting coach and pitching coach at different times during his four years there.
Smith has also held the position of assistant coach to the baseball programs at the University of Kentucky (1987-91), where he helped with the infielders, catchers and pitchers, and the University of Tennessee (1983-87), instructing both the catchers and outfielders.
Smith earned a bachelors degree in physical education from Mississippi State University in 1981 and completed his masters of education at Louisiana State University in 1983. While at MSU, he was also a member of the baseball team (1979-80) and was a graduate assistant baseball coach at LSU.
George Washington was 23-31-1 overall in 2007 and 14-13 in the A-10, finishing just one spot out of the conference tournament, despite ending the year with a season-best six-game winning streak. It was their 14th straight season with at least 20 wins.
