PHILADELPHIA, PA - George Washington (16-23-1, 8-7 A-10) scored at least 12 runs for the third straight day as they downed Saint Joseph's (6-29, 3-12 A-10) in the series finale, 13-7, Sunday afternoon at Latshaw-McCarthy Field. With the win, the Colonials earned their first Atlantic 10 Conference series victory this season and have now won five of their past seven games overall, and five of their past six conference games.
In the three game series, the Colonials outscored the Hawks 45-20 and recorded a total of 55 hits. GW raised their team-batting average from .279 to .291 over the three-game series.
In Sunday's win, GW was led offensively by freshman Curtis Eward (Oak Hill, VA/Oakton), who recorded four RBI for the second straight day. The designated hitter, who had six hits in Saturday's game, finished 2-for-5 on Sunday. Between the two games, he recorded a hit in eight consecutive at-bats and safely reached base in 10 straight plate appearances.
Michael Parker (Newton, MA/Newton South) was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. The senior shortstop finished the series against Saint Joseph's 11-for-15 with 11 runs scored and four RBI in just three games.
In today's series finale, GW jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Colonials scored the first run on Parker's single that plated Mickey Shupin (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall), who had reached on an infield base hit. After two more singles, Curtis Eward hit a three-run home run deep to left field, his second of the year.
Saint Joseph's fought back and scored two runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the second, to take a 5-4 lead, their first advantage of the series. GW responded with two runs in the third to claim a lead that they would not relinquish.
The Colonials added a run in the fourth with a Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) sacrifice fly to center field that scored Tom Zebroski (Port Washington, NY/Paul Schreiber).
After Saint Joseph's scored a run in the sixth to draw within one run, 7-6, GW extended their lead with two runs in the seventh and another three in the eighth.
Shupin and Zebroski each had three hits on the day. Kruer, Gavin Swanson (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall College HS) and Doug Eizen (Philiadelphia, PA/The Haverford School) added two hits apiece.
Freshman starting pitcher Faizan Choudhry (Langley, BC/Langley Secondary) earned his third win of the season (3-0), allowing six runs on nine hits in six innings.
George Washington returns home to play host to MD-Eastern Shore on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., at Barcroft Park.
