AMHERST, MA - George Washington (13-23, 5-7 A-10) fell, 5-4, in the opening game of a doubleheader at Massachusetts (9-15, 4-8), but rebounded to win the nightcap, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field.
The Colonials won two of the three games against the Minutemen, giving them their first Atlantic 10 Conference series win of the season. GW defeated Massachusetts on Friday in the opener, 9-4.
In game one on Saturday, GW jumped out to claim an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Mickey Shupin (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) singled and eventually scored on a ground out hit by Michael Parker (Newton, MA/Newton South).
After Massachusetts tied the game in the fourth, GW answered with three runs in their half of the sixth to take the lead, 4-1, capitalizing on two errors. They nearly scored one more run, but Curtis Eward (Oak Hill, VA/Oakton) was thrown out at the plate. The Minutemen responded, scoring a run in the seventh and then another three in the eighth to take the lead, and the game, 5-4.
Jim Cassidy (3-1), the starter for Massachusetts, limited GW to just five hits over eight innings of work while striking out five. The Colonials' Scott Swinson (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) scattered nine hits over 7 1/3 innings, but suffered his fifth loss of the year.
In the afternoon's second game, the Colonials defeated the Minutemen, 6-1, behind strong pitching from freshman Faizan Choudhry (Langley, BC/Langley Secondary). In his first career start, Choudhry (2-0) allowed just six hits over seven shutout innings.
Trailing 1-0 entering the fifth, GW scored four runs in the inning to take control of the game, capped by Charlie Kruer's (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) two-run single through the right side.
In the sixth, the Colonials loaded the bases for Tom Zebroski (Port Washington, NY/Paul Schreiber), who singled in the fifth run of the game for GW. They added their sixth and final run in the ninth as Kruer came around to score on a fielder's choice.
George Washington returns home to play host to Delaware State on Tuesday, April 17, at 3:00 p.m. The Colonials defeated the Hornets, earlier this year, 9-7, in Dover, DE.
