GW Baseball Snaps Losing Streak, Beats Massachusetts, 9-4

AMHERST, MA - George Washington (12-22, 4-6 A-10) took an early 9-1 lead after four innings and held on for the 9-4 win over Massachusetts (8-14, 3-7 A-10) Friday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field in the opening game of their three-game conference series.
The win snapped GW's four-game losing streak and was their third in a row at Massachusetts, dating back to the 2002 season.
The Colonials scored in the opening inning for the first time in their past four games. Mickey Shupin (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) led-off with a single up the middle. The starting center fielder advanced to second on a bunt by Tom Zebroski (Port Washington, NY/Paul Schreiber); they both moved up a base on an error by the Minutemen. Shupin and Zebroski both came around to score on Michael Parker's (Newton, MA/Newton South) double into right-center. Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) completed the three-run first inning with a single into center field that drove in Parker.
GW added a run in the second as Tom Zebroski recorded his second sacrifice hit in as many at-bats, flying out to center to allow Gavin Swanson (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall College HS) to score, making it 4-0.
After Massachusetts pushed across a run in the third, GW exploded for five runs in the fourth to take the 9-1 lead. The Colonials sent nine batters to the plate and recorded five hits in the inning, highlighted by Michael Parker's second two-run double of the game. Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) followed Parker with a single to plate two more runs.
Parker finished the day 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs.
The nine runs were more than enough for GW starting pitcher Pat Lehman (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn), who allowed just five hits and the one run over seven innings of work. The hard-throwing sophomore was making his first start since Feb. 23, at Maryland.
The Minutemen scratched together three runs in the bottom of the ninth on Lou Proietti's bases-clearing double.
The two teams will complete their series tomorrow, playing a doubleheader in an effort to beat the pending inclement weather. Game one is set for 12:00 p.m., with game two tentatively scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
Game Notes: Mickey Shupin was 3-for-5, his second three-hit performance in the past three games ... Andrew Abokhair and Doug Eizen each recorded two hits ... Chris Davis (Richmond, BC/Burnett Secondary) pitched the final two innings for the Colonials ... GW improved to 12-13 all-time against Massachusetts.
