Baseball Drops Series Opener to Richmond

ARLINGTON, VA - Richmond (16-10, 4-0 A-10) recorded 14 hits as they defeated George Washington, 13-2, in game one of their three game Atlantic 10 Conference series at Barcroft Park. With the loss, the Colonials fall to 8-17 overall, 1-3 in the conference.
The game was origninally called after seven innings of play on Friday, but in accordance with A-10 policies, the two teams completed the contest Saturday afternoon before their scheduled game two.
Richmond opened the scoring early, pushing a run across in the top of the first on a Vince Riggi RBI-single, taking advantage of a GW fielding error.
The Spiders exploded for five runs in the third, putting together four singles, one hit batsman, one walk, a sacrifice fly and two GW errors to score five runs. They added another three in the fourth, two of which came home on right fielder Brian McKenna's single into center field.
Richmond added a single run in both the fifth and sixth innings, extending their lead to 11-0. In the top of the seventh, pinch-hitter Andrew Justice slugged a first-pitch, two-run home run to right center to give the Spiders their final runs of the day.
The Colonials scored their two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, with RBI-singles from both Andrew Haberern and Tim Reeves.
Richmond's starter, Matt Zielinski (3-2), struck out 10 batters and walked only two as he pitched the whole game.
GW's Brian Frazier suffered the loss (0-4).
The two teams continue their three-game series Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
