DAVIDSON, NC - Junior Kristin Karcsh scored a hat trick and senior Kristina Harvey added a career-high three points as the George Washington women's lacrosse team wrapped up its Spring Break road trip with an 11-9 victory at Davidson on Thursday.
GW (2-2) surrendered the first goal of the contest less than three minutes in, but responded by scoring five of the next six to pull away in the first half. Karcsh tallied her first goal at the 24:56 mark of the opening stanza and senior Molly Gannon netted her first goal of the year just four seconds after the following draw to take the lead for good.
Sophomore Katherine Sampson continued the run with a score, her fifth in the last two games, to give the Colonials a 3-1 lead with 11:06 remaining in the first half. Becky Horton scored the second of her three first-half goals, but goals by Karcsh, Harvey and rookie Taylor Donohue, the first of her collegiate career, over the final 6:54 of the period gave GW a 6-3 edge at the break.
Junior Laura Wunk and Harvey recorded free position goals near the start of the second half to help the Colonials extend their lead to 8-5. Junior Hayley McDonough and Donohue netted back-to-back scores to push GW out to a 10-6 advantage with just over 10 minutes to play and Karcsh sealed the victory with her third goal at the 3:48 mark.
Along with her three goals, Karcsh won a game-high four ground balls, while junior Katelyn Honeyford caused a game-high two turnovers. Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Garman made nine saves to earn the win. Both teams fired 26 shots.
Karcsh leads the team with 15 goals this season and is three shy of moving into the program's Top 6 all-time. The Colonials are now 5-0 all-time against Davidson (0-6).
GW will play its first home game of the season at Mount Vernon Athletics Complex against Towson on Sunday at 4:00 pm.
