VESTAL, NY - Lazar Trifunovic scored 19 of his game-high 23 points in the first half as Binghamton defeated George Washington 71-59 at the Bearcats' Events Center Thursday night.
Richard Forbes added 13 points for the Bearcats (2-7), while Mike Gordon and Dwayne Jackson also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Rob Diggs led the Colonials (3-5) with 20 points and a career high 16 rebounds for his fourth career double-double, while Wynton Witherspoon chipped in with 18 points. Noel Wilmore scored all ten of his points in the first half.
Trifunovic was deadly from the field, and got to the line often shooting 7-9 from the field and 9-11 from the charity stripe. Forbes also took advantage of his aggressiveness, scoring eight of his points from the line. The Bearcats went 29-40 from the free throw line on the night.
Despite out-rebounding Binghamton, GW was unable to take advantage shooting 36 percent from the field and making only 12-22 free throws, just 55%.
A pair of free throws by Witherspoon tied the game at 2 apiece with 19:31 remaining in the first half, but the Bearcats went on a 23-7 run in the next 10:35 to take their largest lead of the game at 16.
The Colonials twice cut the lead to five, with the latest being on a follow-up slam by Diggs, off a missed layup by Witherspoon with 5:14 remaining in regulation.
Binghamton's victory was their first in three meetings with George Washington. The loss was the Colonials fourth straight road loss.
GW will be back in action Sunday, December 23 when they host the Longwood Lancers at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center at 2:00 pm.
