WASHINGTON (AP) -Wynton Witherspoon had 19 points and reserve Damian Hollis had 11 points and 11 rebounds as George Washington overcame a 13-point deficit to beat Longwood 63-54 on Sunday.
GW played without senior guard and co-captain Maureece Rice, who was suspended for one game by coach Karl Hobbs for breaking a team rule, according to a GW spokesman. Rice was also suspended for the game at Maryland-Baltimore County on Nov. 24.
Witherspoon scored eight straight points to give GW (4-5), which trailed by 13 points late in the first half, a 37-30 lead with 16 minutes left in the game. The Colonials did not trail after Witherspoon's 3-pointer gave them a 32-30 lead early in the second half.
Longwood senior Lamar Barrett had a season-high 21 points for Longwood (3-12) which lost its 24th straight road game over the past two seasons. Barrett had 19 points in the first half.
Hollis hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Colonials a 54-47 lead with three minutes left in the game. Cheyenne Moore had 12 points and Miles Beatty added a season-high 11 points for GW.
