Today's Game: GW (2-0) embarks on its first `road trip' (36 miles) of the season Saturday and takes the court for the first time in nine days (Nov. 14) to face its second straight America East Conference opponent in UMBC (3-1). • This marks the Colonials' first visit to UMBC in 18 years and enter today's game with a 2-0 record after defeating AE preseason favorite Boston University, 69-56, in their last outing Nov. 14 in Washington. • The GW-UMBC series dates back 19 years to the 1988-89 season. • GW has won two straight in the series, most recently a 72-51 victory last Dec. 12 at Smith Center. • UMBC was picked to finish fifth in the nine-team America East Conference in the league's Preseason Coaches' Poll announced Nov. 6. • GW has won 48 of its last 57 regular-season games and 29 of its last 34 A-10 games. • UMBC is coming off an 87-84 overtime loss at Lafayette Nov. 20.
A Closer Look at UMBC: A school of 12,000 students, UMBC is a member of the America East Conference located south of Baltimore less than 36 miles from the GW campus. The Retrievers have been picked to finish sixth in the America East in the preseason coaches' poll announced Nov. 6. The Retrievers are off to a 3-1 start that includes a pair of road wins over A-10 members La Salle (76-69) and Richmond (70-68). Cavell Johnson, a senior forward who transferred to UMBC from James Madison, is the reigning America East Player of the Week. In UMBC's road wins over La Salle and Richmond, he averaged 18.5 points and 9.5 rebounds, while shooting 55 percent (17-of-31) from the floor. UMBC is off to a 3-1 start. Most recently (Nov. 20), UMBC fell in overtime at Lafayette, 87-84. The Retrievers had built an 11-point lead at the half but were outscored by 15 points, 27-12, at the free throw line in the loss. Senior G Ray Barbosa led all scorers with 26 points against Lafayette while Johnson added 22 points as the Retrievers shot 43 percent from the field but only 31 percent (8-26) from 3-point range.
