WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University baseball program held their 11th Annual "Home Run" Golf Classic this past Friday, October 12, and their 2007 Alumni Baseball Game the following day.
The Alumni Game was held at the Colonials home field, Barcroft Park, in Arlington, VA. A team comprised of GW baseball alumni gave the 2008 Colonials all it could handle when the two teams met on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The Alumni jumped to a 12-0 lead before the Varsity rallied in the late innings for the 14-13 victory. Participating alumni included Matt Owens '06, Brad Rosenblat '05, Josh Wilkie '06, Geoff Milsom '05, Michael Parker '07, Derek Haese '07, Whitney Wallace '07, Dan Sullivan '06, Mickey Shupin '06, Nate CasaGrande '05, Greg Conden '03, Mike Morello '95, Russ Ramsey '81 and Scott Rowland '84.
The golf tournament was held at the Virginia National Golf Club, in Bluemont, VA, on the banks of the Shenandoah River. Last year's golf tournament raised nearly $25,000 for the baseball program, and over the past decade, it has brought in over $250,000. It has been money used to help the team increase their travel budget, upgrade recruiting efforts and purchase new equipment.
This year was a special occasion, as the tournament welcomed special guest, Sam Perlozzo '73, a GW Athletic Hall of Fame member and former Major League Baseball manager.
George Washington was 23-31-1 overall in 2007 and 14-13 in the A-10, finishing just one spot out of the conference tournament, despite ending the year with a season-best six-game winning streak. It was their 14th straight season with at least 20 wins.
