WASHINGTON, DC -- GW junior Janine Brown returned to action Friday night after missing the last nine matches with an ankle injury but her presence couldn't help GW get past a strong Dayton squad as the Colonials dropped a 3-0 match by the scores 19-30, 19-30, 27-30 at GW's Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. It was the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams.
Senior Abba Greenleaf scored 12.5 points on 10 kills and four blocks to lead the Colonials. Greenleaf hit .348 with just two errors in 23 attacks. Juliene McLaughlin and Liz Moult added seven kills each to pace the Colonials' offense. McLaughlin added a match-high 16 digs. Brown's game suffered from the three-week layoff as she managed just three kills in 14 swings.
Friday's match began with the Flyers breezing to a pair of 30-19 victories in games one and two. Dayton combined to hit .395 in the first game and .314 in the second game while the Colonials struggled and hit just .158 in game one and .083 in game two.
Following the 10-minute intermission, GW came out strong in game three and led most of the way including a 21-15 advantage after consecutive Dayton attack errors. The Flyers slowly battled back to tie the game at 24-24 on a kill by Nicole Bateman. A service ace by Jamie-Lee Richards and a kill by Greenleaf left the teams tied again at 25-25. UD's Faye Barhorst smashed a kill before GW responded with a kill by Greenleaf to knot the score again at 26-26. Dayton then scored the next three points on a GW attack error, a kill by Chauntay Mickens and ended the match on a dink kill by Chelsy Christoff just over a GW block.
Barhorst led the Flyers with 15 opints on 12 kills and four blocks while Bateman added 13 kills and Richards accounted for 13.5 points on 11 kills, three block assists and an ace.
GW (7-6, 0-1 A-10) next hosts Xavier (7-7, 1-0 A-10) Sunday at noon at Charles E. Smith Athletics Center.
