WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University junior shortstop Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA/Lithia Springs) has earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second Team honors, announced by the NFCA on Wednesday. Meyers was one of three shortstops voted to the Second Team and is now eligible for the NFCA All-America ballot.
Meyers, who last week became the first Colonial in softball history to earn Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors, led the Colonials in 2006 in nearly every major offensive category.
She finished as the team leader in batting average (.414), runs (39), hits (65), doubles (13), triples (7), RBI (29), total bases (104), slugging percentage (.662) and stolen bases (22). Meyers also led the A-10 in triples and finished second overall in average, stolen bases and total bases in starting every game at shortstop for the Colonials as they set a record for most victories in a single season with 24.
In addition to being voted one of two First Team All-Conference selections at shortstop, Meyers also was selected as the conference's Student-Athlete of the Year as she garnered Academic All-Conference accolades for the second consecutive season.
One day after being honored by the A-10, Meyers was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic First Team All-District performer. With her First Team selection, she became eligible for the Academic All-America ballot.
In the classroom, Meyers is a six-time member of the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, a two-time Arthur Ashe Jr. Softball First Team Sports-Scholar and has been a member of the GW Athletic Department Dean's List every semester. She earned a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science in December 2005 and is currently in pursuit of a master's degree in Exercise Science in Clinical Exercise Physiology.
