Lacrosse Squeaks Past American, 9-8

WELLINGTON, FL -- The George Washington women's lacrosse team built a 6-1 halftime lead, then hung on to defeat American in a narrow 9-8 decision in a non-conference game in the Spring Fling Lacrosse Festival at Wellington, FL.
GW led AU, 6-1, before the Eagles battled back in the second half to tie the game at 8-8. The Colonials scored one last goal in the final three minutes to take the 9-8 victory.
American got the ball rolling early, scoring the game's first goal to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. George Washington answered with six straight goals over the next 17 minutes to build a 6-1 lead with 12:15 to play in the first frame. AU got back on the board to cut the lead to four but the Colonials answered back to put the score at 7-2. American started their comeback in the waning minutes of the first frame, scoring the last two goals of the half, with the score resting at 7-4 after 30 minutes of play.
AU took the second-half draw control and scored their fifth goal at the 26:57 mark of the second half. Six minutes later George Washington added another goal, putting the Eagles back 8-5. Two straight Eagle goals put American within striking distance when junior Caithlin Gorman tied the game up at 8-8 with 8:12 remaining on an 8-meter blast that beat the Colonial netminder.
With four minutes left, American senior goaltender Kathleen Finnegan made three consecutive stops, setting up the AU offense after the last one. The Eagles had a few scoring opportunities over the next two minutes but the Colonial defense stepped up, thwarting the AU threat. George Washington came down and scored the final goal of the game then won the ensuing draw control and killed the remaining time to win the game, 9-8.
GW improved to 2-3 on the season while American fell to 2-3 with the loss.
