Lacrosse Jumps on Davidson, 17-9

WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington women's lacrosse team took charge early and coasted to an impressive 17-9 victory over visiting Davidson College Friday afternoon at GW's Mount Vernon Field. The Colonials outscored the Wildcats, 9-3, in the first half and 8-6 in the second half and were never threatened. GW is now 4-0 in the all-time series with Davidson.
GW sophomore attacker Laura Wunk (Ellicott City, MD) lit up the Wildcats for five scores and an assist for six points. Wunk scored the first goal of the game less than a minute in to set the tone for the match. GW senior Annie Howley (Levittown, NY) scored five minutes later on a free position shot and freshman Megan Cratty (Wilton, CT) got into the act with an unassisted goal one minute later to put GW up, 3-0.
Davidson's Eloise Grose got the Wildcats on the scoreboard with a goal after taking a pass from Emily Palmer at the 21:11 mark but Howley answered with a goal off an assist from Wunk for a 4-1 GW advantage and the rout was on. GW closed out the half with five more goals to Davidson's two scores for the 9-3 halftime advantage.
Davidson (5-3) came out strong after halftime and got an unassisted goal from Becky Horton less than three minutes into the second half. GW responded with three unanswered goals, one each by Lauren Bower (Moorestown, NJ), Wunk, and junior Laura Hostetler (Ellicott City, MD) to go up, 12-4. Davidson broke the string with a goal by Anna Mitchell before the Colonials scored three more goals, two by Wunk and one by sophomore Katelyn Honeyford (Moorestown, NJ) for a commanding 15-5 lead.
Davidson (5-3) sandwiched four goals around a pair of GW goals for the final margin.
Both teams played both of their goalkeepers. GW sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Garman (Baltimore, MD/Friends School) started in goal and played the entire first half while junior Emily Fortunato (Farmingdale, NY) took over after halftime. Davidson starter Leslie Smith, a senior from Fairfax, VA, gave way to sophomore Laura Johnson for much of the second half before replacing Johnson late in the game.
GW next travels to William & Mary this Sunday, Mar. 26, for a noon game at Williamsburg, VA.
