Post-game quotes
GW Coach Joe McKeown
Opening comments
"It was a real solid win. We played great defense, which made the difference. Villanova is a great shooting team, though they didn't look like it tonight. Jessica Adair physically dominated the game in the paint."
The team came out very fired up. Did you sense higher team morale?
"The second half of the James Madison game was unbelievable. The intensity carried over to practice this week, and it carried over to tonight."
What was the key to that 15-point run in the first half?
"We had answers [to every defense]. When we went inside, Jessica would score. When they double-teamed her, we'd kick it out. Sarah-Jo [Lawrence] hit a three. Kim Beck hit a three. When you can play inside-out, you're a tough match-up. At the same time, we shut them down at the other end."
How is your freshman class coming along?
"They've helped us even though they haven't scored very much yet. We need some `feel-good' games, where they can get some minutes and the game isn't on the line. Unfortunately, our schedule hasn't allowed that. But they are going to help us during the year. I just hope it's sooner than later."
Junior guard Kimberly Beck
What helped you come out strong today?
"The key was to put together a complete game. It wasn't just the first five minutes; it was 40 minutes that we wanted to put together. The way we came out, Villanova was just deflated and they really couldn't get going."
Is the offense progressing the way you want it to?
"Each game, we've had breakdowns that I don't think we should have. It's still early in the season, but I think things are clicking and tonight we were on the same page. We just need to limit the number of breakdowns."
What are your thoughts on the next two games?
"Tennessee is two games away, but we've got Stony Brook first and we're not thinking ahead. We're going to prepare for them the way we'd prepare for any team."
Junior forward Whitney Allen
Were you impressed with the way you defended Jackie Adamshick?
"Most definitely. She's the heart and soul of their team. I felt that if I could disrupt her, I could help disrupt the team as a whole. I feel like I did my job today."
Villanova Coach Harry Perretta
Opening comments
"This is the youngest team I've ever coached. When you're playing seven freshmen and sophomores, you can look really bad, especially when you're playing a team that has experience and athleticism. Good teams are taking advantage of every mistake we make, which is what they should do."
On Jessica Adair
"She can play both inside and outside. She took advantage of our inexperienced players, which she should do."
How does this GW team compare to those you've faced in previous years?
"It's hard to tell if it's our errors, the quality of their play, or a combination of both. This team is deeper than other teams Joe has had, but the other teams were a little more experienced."
Did GW's defense force you to take more three's?
"Yes. We can't post them up because our post player is a freshman trying to play against a more talented and experienced player. We figured it was better to attempt a three than not even get a chance to try a two. The only mismatch we got in the game was having a mobile kid against a bigger player, and that gave us a chance at a three."
Is this home-and-home series good for both Villanova and GW?
"It's always good to play a team that's going to be athletic and talented; that's what they present to us. And for us to get ready for the Big East, we need to find teams like that. And it's close by, we recruit down here, so it's good to come down here and play."
